Brick by Brick
About the Project
Brief: Brick by Brick is a commercial office building located in Mohali, Punjab, designed by Studio Ardete and completed in 2022. The 9,000-square-foot structure is intended for leasing to various tenants, with interior layouts left adaptable to meet diverse functional requirements.
Context: Situated in a rapidly developing industrial area, the project faced challenges due to local bylaws mandating front and rear setbacks, limiting opportunities for natural massing. Additionally, the region's subtropical climate, characterized by harsh summer sun and frequent dust due to ongoing construction, influenced the design approach.
Approach: To enhance the visual appeal of the otherwise plain façade, the design incorporates an art installation-like treatment using a brick jaali (perforated screen), infusing a traditional Indian element that presents a modern aesthetic. Vertical fins and brick jaali work together to moderate the microclimate, providing shade and reducing heat gain, while planters on the parapet contribute to a pleasant environment.
The choice of materials, including steel, concrete, and glass, along with a color palette contrasting white, gray, and brick red, adds drama and interest to the façade.
